Camping Northern Spain

The North of Spain teems with beautiful coastline, sandy beaches, tiny fishing villages, and some of the best cuisine in the country. It's a huge area which stretches from the sun soaked shores of the Costa Brava, past the towering Pyrenees Mountains and the Bay of Biscay, and all the way along the northern coastline to Galicia in the north west above Portugal. Though it is possible stay in hotels or guest houses, the best way to experience the countryside is staying in one of the campsite, of which there are hundreds. Here is a rundown of some of our favourites.

Campsite Picos de Europa

The Picos de Europa is located in Avin in the Asturias region. The campsite has hundreds of grassy pitches available for tents, campervans, and motorhomes, some of which have shade. They also have several bungalows with bedrooms, private bathrooms, living spaces, kitchens, and outdoor terraces with tables and chairs. Dogs are permitted on the camping ground, but they must be kept on a lead. There is lots to do on the campsite including guided walks, and sporting tournaments. It boasts an outdoor swimming pool and a shallow pool for toddlers. You can cook up camp meals on the barbecues provided or use the restaurant which has an extensive menu or Spanish and international classics. Internet access is available throughout.

Campsite Cala Llevado

The Cala Llevado campsite is located in Tossa de Mar near Girona in the Catalonian region of Spain. The campsite is located close to both the forests and the rocky coastline and sea. There are plenty of pitches available for tents, campervans, and motorhomes, some of which have shade, while others are sunny. Guests are permitted to pick which they prefer. Dogs are permitted throughout the season, though they must be kept on a lead. On site there is a sports ground where guests can play football or volleyball, and a children's playground. The staff offer guided walks and mountain biking rides along the beautiful coastline. Or you can head down to the beach for snorkelling, swimming, and water sports. Back at camp, guests can go swimming in the large outdoor pool and there is a shallow pool for toddlers. There are barbecues provided for cooking your own camp meals, or you can eat in the restaurant which serves up some excellent dishes. In the morning, you can buy freshly baked bread and pastries for breakfast. Internet access is available throughout.

Campsite Stel

The Campsite Stel is located in Roda de Bara near Tarragona in Catalonia. Facing out over the Mediterranean Sea, it is a particularly beautiful site. The large amount of grassy pitches is available for tents, campervans, and motorhomes, some of which have shade, while others are sunny. There are also bungalows complete with bedrooms, living rooms, and private terraces are comfortable and an alternative to camping. The camp features an outdoor swimming pool with waterslides, a shallow toddlers' pool, a hot tub, a children's playground, and a sports ground. Nearby, you can go swimming, snorkelling, or windsurfing in the sea. There is a restaurant with an extensive menu, and a bar. Freshly baked bread and pastries are delivered each morning and internet access is available throughout.

Campsite Les Medes

The Campsite Les Medes is located in l'Estartit, near to Girona. It has plenty of grassy shaded spots available, some of which have electrical and water hook ups. Guests are permitted to set up camp, or bring their caravans or motorhomes. There is room on the spacious pitches to park a car. If you don't want to camp, the site has several comfortable bungalows with private facilities. Dogs are permitted on the site, but you will need to keep them on a lead. The campground features a children's playground, an outdoor swimming pool, a heated indoor pool, and a shallow children’s pool. Guests can go hiking, biking, or fishing nearby. When they return back to the camp, cook up a camp dinner, or grab dinner at the onsite restaurant. Internet access is available throughout the camp.

Campsite Roca Grossa

This beautiful campsite is located in Calella near to Barcelona, right on the sea. There are plenty of pitches available for camps, caravans, and motorhomes. Guests are welcome to choose whether they want shady or sunny pitches. Some have electricity and water hook ups. If you don't want to camp, you can hire one of the camps bungalows. Dogs are permitted, but must be kept on a lead. Guests can wander down to the beach to sunbathe or swim in the sea. The camp also features a sports ground, a gym, an outdoor swimming pool, and water sports. You don't have to cook meals, as the restaurant serves up hot food all day. It also has internet access throughout.

Campsite Alquezar

The Alquezar campsite is another excellent spot located in Huesca. There are plenty of shady pitches which guests can bring tents, campervans, and motorhomes too. The site also features fine bungalows with everything you would expect from a hotel room including private bathrooms and a living space. Dogs are allowed, but you must keep them on a lead when on the camping ground. It features everything you would expect from a quality site including an outdoor swimming pool, and guided hiking tours. You can eat meals in the restaurant or the snack bar, and there is a grocery store selling fresh bread and local produce.

Campsite Tucan

This budget campsite is located on the Lloret de Mar near Girona, a city in the north of Catalonia and a popular region for camping. There are plenty of pitches available for tents, campervans, and motorhomes, as well as bungalows to rent should you wish for something a little more comfortable. The camping ground is located just down the road from a sandy beach where you can sun bathe, swim, or take part in the optional water sports. At the site, the staff put on entertainment throughout the summer months, and there is a solarium where you can top up your tan. There is also a heated outdoor swimming pool with waterslides, as well as a toddlers' pool. There are several restaurants with excellent Spanish cuisine available, and a grocery store with all the things you would need for your stay.

Campsite Urrobi

The Campsite Urrobi is located in Aurizbeeri near Navarre. It sits on the banks of the river, and has many shady pitches available for campers. Like the other campsites, there are wooden chalets available should you want something more comfortable. Dogs are permitted. Guests can use the outdoor swimming pool which has a sliding cover in bad weather, the children's playground, or the sports grounds where they can play football and volleyball. There is an onsite restaurant available serving up excellent dishes, or alternatively cook up your own meals on the barbecue or visit the nearby restaurants. Internet access is available throughout the camp.

Campsite A' Vouga

This campsite is located by the sea in the north west region of Galicia. It's just next to a beautiful stretch of rugged beach. There have plenty of pitches available which are spacious and available for tents, campervans, and motorhomes. Dogs are permitted at the campsite as long as they are kept on the lead. Guests can either swim in the outdoor pool, relax on the sun loungers, or head down to the beach to sun bathe, snorkel, or windsurf. For dining options, you can either cook up your own meals, eat in the camp sites restaurant, or visit the local restaurants. There is internet access throughout.

Campsite Laguna

The Campsite Laguna is also located near the sea along the Costa Brava near Girona. It's a beautiful spot that overlooks the ocean. You can pitch your tent or park up your caravans and hook up to the electricity or water supply. Head straight down to the sea to swim, snorkel, or take part in the many optional water sports available. Back at the campsite, there is a kid's playground, and a sports ground where guests can play football and other games. Guests can also swim in one of the heated or non heated outdoor pools. For dinner, you can choose from a number of restaurants, or cook up your own dinner.

Camping Baliera

Another simple but well maintained campsite located in Huesca. It's located on the banks of a river in lovely northern Spanish countryside. There are plenty of pitches here available for camping, and the site also has bungalows and apartments available if you need something a little more comfortable. Guests can use the outdoor swimming pool, work on their tan on the sun loungers, or get some adventure with kayaking and rafting on the river. There is an onsite restaurant and bar and internet access is available in most of the camp.

Campsite Mas Nou

Another campsite near Girona in the Castello d'Empuries. The spacious pitches are market out and offer some shade for campers. Caravans and motorhomes are also permitted to park up. If you don't want to camp, there is a range of wooden chalets complete with bedrooms, living spaces, kitchens, and private decked terraces with outdoor furniture. Dogs are allowed on the campsite, so feel free to bring your pets as long as you keep them on the lead. The campsite features an outdoor swimming pool, toddlers' pool, cycling routes, and a restaurant which serves up Catalonian and Spanish classics. Internet access is available throughout.

Campsite Del Cardos

The Campsite Del Cardos is located in Ribera de Cardos near Lleida. It's a forested campsite located on the banks of a river with plenty of shady pitches available for campers. There are wooden cabins available for hikers who want a little more comfort. Most of the pitches have electricity and water supply should you need it. There is plenty to do in and around the campsite including swimming in the outdoor pools, some of which are heated, using the water slides, going hiking along the trails, or canoeing in the river. There is also a children's playground and a sports grounds. There is an onsite restaurant for meals, or you can cook up supper on the rented barbecues. Internet access is available throughout.

Campsite Clara

Campsite Clara is located in Torredembarra near Tarragona. It's nestled right on the beachfront overlooking the ocean. You can hire pitches which are either shaded by the trees or a sunny spot, and they are available for motorhomes and caravans with cars as well. Small bungalows and mobile homes complete with kitchens, living spaces, private bathrooms, and terraces are available should you wish to pay a little more money. Dogs are allowed at the site. Most people head down to the beach to sunbathe, swim in the sea, go snorkeling, or take part in the optional water sports including body boarding, paddle boarding, or windsurfing. Freshly baked bread is available from the grocery store each morning, as well as all the provisions you might need. You can eat in the local restaurants or at the onsite pizzeria. Internet access is available throughout, but why would you need it in such a gorgeous setting!
