Krabi Airport to Ao Nang

by Guest

Situated on the southern coast of Thailand, Krabi is a popular destination for both backpackers and those looking for upmarket resorts. The powdery white beaches, palms, Andaman Sea and beautiful limestone cliffs that jut out of the sea are all draws for those looking for adventure, snorkeling and beach life. The beach town of Ao Nang is located right along the coast in Krabi province and is one of the most popular coastline spots. The beaches look straight out of the holiday brochures, with towering cliffs and green waters making up the backdrop of beaches lined with colourful long-tail boats. The town has plenty of offer – great nightlife, restaurants, street food and markets, but it also serves as one of the gateways for visiting the islands. These include Phi Phi, the island most famously known as the filming location for the adaptation of Alex Garland’s book ‘The Beach’. Another reason to visit the region is for rock climbing, some of the most challenging and scenic in the world. Lets also not forget about the diving and snorkeling scene here, which remains one of the best in the world.

To best way to get from Bangkok to Krabi is by flight. In both high and low season, there are more than 17 direct flights taking just over an hour to reach. Airlines that serve the route include Nok Air, Bangkok Airways, Thai Lion, Thai Smile, Thai Airways and Air Asia. They depart throughout the day from 6 a.m. through to 7 p.m. You can read more about going from Phuket to Krabi  too.

When you reach Krabi Airport, there are several different ways to reach Ao Nang. Unauthorized taxis are not allowed into the airport, so you will have no risk of being overcharged. You can either take an authorized taxi, take a pre-booked car, hire a rental car or take one of the shuttle buses.

Rent a car

Inside the airport terminal you will find a number of international car rental companies including Hertz, National, Avis and Budget. The prices and standard are similar, so pick at random (or the one with the shortest queue!). If you plan to drive up and down the coast to find other beaches, then this will be your best option. It is almost always more expensive to book last-minute than booking in advance. It’s also worth remembering that the driving standards in Thailand are not the same as in the West. Roads may be pot-holed and drivers sometimes reckless. Always leave plenty of time for your journey, avoid driving at night and never leave your valuables in full view. You will need to drop the car back at Krabi Airport if you don’t want to incur a one-way drop off fee.

By taxi

None of the taxis at Krabi Airport run off the metre. There is a fixed price of the fare and tickets can be bought from booths inside the terminal building. The prices are around US $20 for a one-way taxi to your Ao Nang hotel which takes around an hour and is 32 kilometres. After buying your ticket, head out to the taxi queue on the road outside to wait for a free taxi. You shouldn’t have to wait long. If you walk outside the airport, it may be possible to get a cheaper taxi by the road. Be sure to ask that the taxi uses the metre and it should cost around $15. If you don’t want to queue, speak with your hotel or hostel in advance, and it may be possible to pre-book a car to arrive when you do and take you straight to your accommodation. The price might be slightly more expensive, but it is well worth it for convenience.

By bus

Airport shuttle buses are the cheaper, albeit longer way to travel between Krabi Airport to Ao Nang. Buses leave every hour or so between 8 am and 8 pm. The journey is consderibaly longer as the buses first visit Krabi Town before heading on to Ao Nang. Tickets cost US $4 on way and can be bought from the booths inside the terminal. This option is only really better than a taxi if there are less than four of you.

Returning to Krabi Airport

To get back to Krabi Airport, there are similar options. Speak with the reception of your hotel who will easily be able to book a private car or taxi. The costs will be around US $20. Alternatively, just head out into the road and hail down a taxi, but be sure to ask that they use the metre or negotiate a fare before you leave. If you decide to take the shuttle bus, it leaves from outside Ao Nang McDonald’s. The journey takes an hour and a half as it goes via Krabi Town. Departure times can vary, so leave with lots of time.
