Take a minivan from Krabi to Koh Lanta

Arguably the most popular route to get between Krabi and Koh Lanta is in one of the minivan shuttle buses. If you are travelling as a couple or solo, a public minivan is your cheapest option. For families or those travelling in a group, book yourself a private minivan at almost the same cost. The minivans ply their trade outside of Krabi Airport and can be booked at the kiosk inside the terminal. Whereas the private minivans leave when you have all arrived, the public minivans will wait until they are full before departing, meaning you might have to wait around a while. Private minivans can also be arranged from Krabi Town or the beach town of Ao Nang. They fit around 6-8 people depending on their size. After leaving the airport the van will drive down to the pier around an hour away. It will then board the ferry (which you will have to pay at the cost of around US $1 per person) and cross over for 20 minutes to Koh Lanta Noi. You’ll drive off the ferry and across the bridge onto Koh Lanta proper and then continue on to your hotel. Depending on where your hotel or hostel is located on Koh Lanta, the journey takes anywhere between 3 to 4 hours to reach. More luxurious vehicle options are available, albeit at a high price, if you wish to travel in a higher level of comfort. A private minivan costs a flat fee of around US $70 for everything. A public minivan is around US $15 per person.

Rent a car and drive to Koh Lanta

Another option to get to Koh Lanta, and one that offers much more freedom, is to hire a rental car. Inside Krabi Airport terminal there are all the major international car rental companies such as Budget and Hertz. Here you can purchase your rental and drive down to Koh Lanta. Unless you decide to stay in Ao Nang or somewhere along the way, you will be following roughly the same route as the minivan. Take the hour or so journey down to the pier, cross over on the ferry for around 30 minutes and then drive off onto Koh Lanta and onwards to your hotel or hostel. With stops and waiting time at the pier, the journey is around 3 hours. It’s only really worth hiring a car if you plan to do some driving around the island and are travelling in a group of up to 5 people. A few things to remember if you are going to rent a car in Thailand. It’s always worth booking your car in advance and it can be considerably cheaper. Depending on who you book with, you will need to leave a deposit of up to US $1,500 on your credit card which will be returned to you should you not damage the car. The cost of renting a car in Krabi is around US $20 per day and petrol is roughly US $1 a litre. There is nowhere to drop the car on Koh Lanta, so you will need to drop the car back at Krabi Airport. You may need to show an International Driving License which can easily be applied for before you leave. Driving standards in Thailand are not the way as elsewhere, so be sure to take extra caution on the roads and try to avoid travelling at night.

Go in style on your private speedboat to Koh Lanta

The easiest and most luxurious way to travel to Koh Lanta is onboard a private speedboat. When you arrive at Krabi Airport you will be whisked away to the pier around 15 minutes away and board the boat. If you are already staying in Krabi Town, Ao Nang or somewhere else in the province, a transfer can be arranged from there instead. After you board the speedboat, it will leave for Koh Lanta, a journey that takes under 30 minutes. At the other end you will be picked up and transferred on to you hotel. The whole journey takes just an hour and a half door to door. Look around to find the best deal, but count on a private speedboat costing US $60 per person, with some discount for children. There are several companies online where you can book this service in advance as it‘s more difficult to book on arrival. During the monsoon season between May and October, the rough seas mean that they boats rarely leave.

All aboard the ferry from Krabi to Koh Lanta

Another easy way to each Koh Lanta is on the daily ferry service from Ao Nang. It‘s not really advisable to book the ferry for the day you arrive in Krabi from your flight as the connection can be very tight and Ao Nang is a pleasant enough place to while away an evening before continuing. The ferry departs in the morning from the pier and stops in Koh Phi Phi for an hour allowing guests to explore a little before it departs for Koh Lanta. It costs around US $20 for a one way ticket and only departs during the high season months of November to April. At the other end, you will need to find a taxi to take you on to your hotel. If you have plenty of time, this is a lovely way to get between Krabi and Koh Lanta.

If you want the quickest way to get between the two and you are travelling in a group, take the speedboat option, it is by far the most convenient. The cheapest way is to jump in public minivan at the airport, or take one of the private vans if you are travelling in a group. Hiring a car is only recommended if you are travelling in a group and want to explore other parts of the island or mainland. The ferry service is reasonable value and a great way to travel between the two, particularly with a stop in Koh Phi Phi, but it takes up valuable time. The journey can be done in reverse when you return.
