Krabi to Phi Phi - Ways to Travel

by Guest

Koh Phi Phi is home to some of the world’s finest beaches. Travelers flock here for the year round sunshine, freshly caught seafood, scenic views of the limestone karsts and visits to Maya Bay, the filming location of the 90s movie ‘The Beach’. These young backpackers have meant an explosion of bars, restaurants, and hotels on the island, but this still doesn’t spoil one of Thailand’s most beautiful spots. One of the easiest ways to reach Phi Phi is to first fly to Krabi Airport on the mainland. There are direct flights from both Bangkok (more than 17 flights throughout the day) and Chiang Mai (2 daily flights). When you reach Krabi , there are several places to stay , but most base themselves either in Krabi Town or the nearby beachfront Ao Nang. Both have daily ferry services to Koh Phi Phi. There used to be a small seaplane transfer, the only operation in Thailand, offering scenic flights from Krabi and Phuket to Phi Phi Island, but this doesn’t appear to be existence any longer.

You cannot bring any vehicles to Koh Phi Phi as there are no roads, just sandy tracks used by motorbikes to transport goods around the island. To get around, you can either walk, or hire a bicycle (a popular way to see the island).

Ferry from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi

If you are departing from Krabi Town, particularly good if you have arrived at the airport, there are two services throughout the day. The first is 10 a.m. and the second 15.00 p.m. Both take 1 and a half hours to reach Koh Phi Phi and are comfortable enough, though can get a little rocky sometimes. The boats depart from Krabi pier located on Tharua Road which is easily reached by a taxi or shuttle bus from both town and the airport. Tickets can be bought from the kiosk on arrival and at the time of writing cost around US $12 for an adult. You can easily buy the tickets from the travel agencies in town or your hotel reception. It’s worth booking in advance if you plan to travel during a public holiday.

Ferry from Ao Nang to Koh Phi Phi

Ao Nang is a popular beach town not far from Krabi Town and is one of the preferred destination for backpackers. Here is how you can reach Ao Nang from Krabi airport . There is a daily ferry service from Ao Nang to Koh Phi Phi which departs at 9.00 a.m. The ferry departs from Nopparat Thara Pier, and there is a free shuttle bus from Ao Nang Beach. The advantage of this ferry over Krabi, is it stops en route at Koh Phai, also called Bamboo Island, so that guests can have some snorkeling time. This means the journey is a little longer taking 2 and a half hours. The cost is exactly the same at US $12 and it is worth booking your tickets in advance as the single service a day sometimes gets booked up.

Both of the ferry services arrive at Ton Sai Pier. From here, your luggage will be offloaded and you can either walk to your hotel if it is nearby (most of them are) or take one of the colourful long-tailed boats around the bay to the hotels. The prices to come back are exactly the same. Koh Phi Phi to Krabi Town departs at 9.00 a.m. and 16.00 p.m. every day while the ferry back to Ao Nang departs at 15.30 p.m., but doesn’t have the snorkelling spot on the way back. Again, tickets can usually be bought from the local travel agencies on Koh Phi Phi or your hotel reception desk.
