Getting from Phuket to Koh Phi Phi

by Guest

Phuket and Koh Phi Phi are two of Thailand’s most popular islands for tourists. While Phuket has the nightlife, restaurants, and bars comparable to the capital, Koh Phi Phi offers some of the most gorgeous scenery of secluded sandy bays and towering limestone karsts. Here, you can swim in the turquoise waters, take long-tailed boat trips around the island, snorkel or kayak with colorful marine life and coral, and rock climb the beautiful cliffs. It’s no surprise then than many people want to include both of the islands on their vacation. There are several ways to travel from Phuket to Koh Phi Phi including by car, bus, speedboat and ferry. Once you are there, there are several types of accommodation for all budgets and preferences.

Travel by ferry between Phuket and Koh Phi Phi

The easiest, quickest, and cheapest way to travel between Phuket and Koh Phi Phi is on the daily ferry service. The large boats depart from Rasada Pier just outside Phuket Town at 8.30 a.m. and 14.30 p.m. throughout the high season between November and April. The ferry is quick and sometimes passes Phi Phi Ley and Maya Bay before arriving. The journey takes around an hour and a half. In the fringes of the high season, you can just turn up and by your ticket at the pier which costs US $12 one way. During January and February when tourism is at its busiest, it is worth booking your tickets in advance which can be done at any of the Phuket travel agencies, online or at your hotel tour desk. When you arrive in Ton Sai Bay pier, you collect your luggage and make your way to the hotel, either by walking or taking one of the long-tailed boats around the island.

Travel by speedboat between Phuket and Koh Phi Phi

If you want to travel in style and you have deep pockets or you are travelling in a group, consider taking one of the many private speedboats between Phuket and Koh Phi Phi. Other than the speed, the journey only takes around 45 minutes, the other advantage is the company will pick you up from your Phuket accommodation and take you to the pier. There is a flat fee of around US $150, so if you are travelling in a large group, it’s not much more expensive than the ferry service. Like the ferry, most speedboats only operate during the high season. Between April and October, though it may be possible to get a hire a private speedboat, be warned that the journey can be bumpy.

Travel by bus and ferry between Phuket and Koh Phi Phi

Outside of the high season, your options for reaching Koh Phi Phi become more limited, and more difficult. Throughout the year, there are four daily bus services connecting Phuket and Krabi. The buses drive across the bridge onto the mainland, over the peninsula and down to Krabi in around 4 hours. The bus costs US $6 for a one way ticket. From Krabi, there are several ferry options from Ao Nang or Krabi Town or private speedboats across to the island. If you are really desperate you can hire a car in Phuket which will need to be returned back to Phuket (and left in Krabi when you cross to Koh Phi Phi) or take an expensive taxi ride between Phuket and Krabi before taking the ferry. If for any reason you must stop over at Krabi, here are some good places to stay and information about areas to stay in .
