South Goa Resorts

by Kshaunish Jaini

Goa offers a wide range of accommodation choices for travellers, with some of the most eclectic collection of hostels for backpackers and quaint homestays for budget travellers who want to experience a slice of Goan life. The bespoke resorts of Goa though are a completely different ballgame. Ranging from utterly decadent in terms of luxury to extremely dedicated to concerns like ecology and art, Goan resorts offer an utterly immersive experience of refinement and taste.

In this article we will be focusing on resorts located in South Goa, which are quite different from the popular tourist beaches and resorts in the north , specifically starting right from the Dabolim airport, which is located approximately at the centre of the state. The southern part of Goa, often ignored by weekend tourists, is actually extremely rewarding in itself - with white sandy beaches , cozy lagoons and some of the best food and drink options that the state has to offer. All the resorts mentioned in this list are either a one or two minute walk away from the beach, or in many cases, come with a slice of the beach in their backyard. Coupled with serene natural beauty and great service, these resorts are some of the best that Goa has to offer.

Coconut Creek

Located just off the petite Bogmalo beach in Bimmut Wado, Bogmalo village, Coconut Creek is perhaps the closest luxury resort from the Dabolim airport - it would not take you more than ten minutes between checking out and nursing a freshly made Sangria next to the beautiful pool at Coconut Creek Resort. The resort has deluxe accommodation in the form of air conditioned cottages to beat the Goan summer heat, which are spread across the premises lined with palm trees. The policy is to respect the patron’s personal space, and the architecture of the resort and the staff service reflect this through and through. Want to head to the beach? Just follow the narrow creek that cuts through the resort and soon the foliage will clear away and the sea will be right in front of you. Also do not miss Coconut Creek’s sister concern - Joet’s Restaurant and Bar - one of the oldest shacks in Bogmalo offering great food and live music on the beach and a perfect place to sip wine any time of the year .

Park Hyatt Resort and Spa

Park Hyatt Resort and Spa is one of the best luxury resorts in Goa, spread across 45 acres of beachside property in Arossim beach, Cansaulim, Goa. 30 minutes south of the airport, Park Hyatt has deservedly established an impeccable reputation when it comes to high-end accommodation through its beautiful design and great service. The resort is essentially a charming Indo-Portuguese village, with 248 Pousada styled rooms that reflect Goan heritage. The resort also houses four separate restaurants offering different cuisines, the award winning Sereno Spa and also one of India’s largest swimming pool with waterslides. Park Hyatt regularly organizes events like corporate retreats, conferences and destination weddings. Add to it the fact that you get access to your own private beach secluded from the rest of the tourist population, a major selling point for the resort.

Alila Diwa

The Alila group of hotels is known to be one of the best in category when it comes to luxury accommodation, and Diwa Goa doesn’t disappoint. Located just on the way to the ever popular Majorda beach in South Goa, the Alila Diwa experience is something to be had. The resort itself is surrounded by lush paddy fields, less than a few minute’s walk from the beach. Alila Diwa is known for its elegant design and architecture. Rooms here have been deliberately designed to give a sense of openness and vibrancy, with local material such as teak, red laterite and polished kota stone used in abundance. Among the many facilities that the resort houses include Spa Alila, Edge Bar and Lounge, and world class restaurants like Vivo and Spice Studio. The staff at Alila Diwa is extremely helpful and adept at handling destination weddings and corporate events.

DreamCatcher Resort is tucked away in the secluded section of the Palolem beach, about 85 km from the Dabolim International airport and 40 km from the southern town of Margao. Palolem itself is one of the most beautiful beaches you will encounter in India, stretching for more than a mile with white sands lined with groves of palm trees and crystal clear blue waters that are a pleasure to swim in. With over 55 individually built cottages scattered along a campsite where the river meets the sea, the resort boasts a location that is right in the middle of a vibrant eco-system. As a result, many of the cove’s inhabitants are frequent visitors in the resort. This includes monkeys, chipmunks and various exotic species of birds that reside in the nearby mangroves. The DreamCatcher resort is extremely conscious of their ecological responsibility and heritage, and the infrastructure is designed and built using local materials such as straw and red laterite with special care and attention to make sure that they are not in any way intrusive to their wild neighbour’s way of life. The resort also organizes backwater rafting, boating and kayaking trips in the network of canals that lead up to the Palolem sea, along with other activities such as reiki, yoga and spa. The resort operates seasonally upto April and is closed from May to November.
