The best beach in Pattaya

by Guest

Pattaya has several beaches both in the city and along the surrounding coastline which hugs the Gulf of Thailand. Which you decide to visit depends on a lot of things like how many amenities you need, how busy you prefer the beaches to be, or the calmness of the water. Arguably the best beach in Pattaya is Jomtien, a 10 kilometre stretch of golden sand which is considerably quieter than its Pattaya beach neighbour. While Pattaya beach is visited by most of the tourists, perhaps because of its proximity to the city centre, Jomtien has long been the weekender getaway beach for the domestic Bangkok tourist crowds. In fact, many have been so taken by the area they have bought up houses and villas along the area. The beach has go much more space than Pattaya beach, and with less crowds, there is always a quiet spot to be found along the sand. Along the beach and the district there are plenty of amenities, from hotels and restaurants, to bars and nightclubs. They are considerably cheaper than the districts nearer to the city centre. The beach and the area around it haven't always been so busy. Even after Pattaya had emerged as one of the top beach locations in Thailand thirty years ago, Jomtien was still small. It's been playing catch up ever since, but this has benefitted from it not getting overrun by backpackers looking for a wild night.

What to do in Jomtien

There are plenty of things to do in Jomtien apart from relaxing on the beach. You can visit the Alangkarn Theatre to see the spectacular cultural show with dancing, musicians, and performances, as well as fireworks and top-notch lighting. At night, be sure to wander through the night market which sells everything from clothing to souvenirs. It's a great place to haggle and pick up some real bargains. The best is the popular Thepprasit Night Market along the road of the same name. It's held everything weekend throughout the year. Another is along Soi 9 just off Jomtien Beach Road and also had a range of products for sale.

It's not all about the beach. There are several water sports schools along Jomtien Beach which offer both windsurfing and kitesurfing lessons and classes. The calm waters and continual sea breeze make for ideal conditions for both the sports, and it’s popular among both Thai and international tourists. Other water sports on offer include sports fishing (you can charter boats or just fish from the shoreline), scuba diving trips, snorkelling, banana boat rides, jet skiing, and parasailing. Alternatively, you can just frolic around in the warm shallow waters which lap onto the golden beach or set up a volleyball net for a quick game in the afternoon.

Restaurants and bars in Jomtien

For restaurants, Jomtien caters for a more Thai tourist crowd, and therefore the food is, usually, of better quality and more authentic taste. While the other restaurants along Pattaya beach tend to tone down the flavours or offer international food to attract in the foreign travellers. Look out for the open air restaurants that overlook the beach and the sea offering mouth-watering seafood at great prices. One of the best places to eat is Suttangrak Pattaya Seafood Restaurant which some say serves up the freshest seafood in the city. It can be busy with Thai and domestic tourists and is located at the end of Jomtien Beach Road. When you are there, be sure to try the deep fried grouper, the house baked shrimps and the steamed crabs in garlic, all of which are delicious. They also have an extensive menu of international and local beers, and wines, though these can get quite expensive. It's a wonderful setting where you can be cooked by the ocean breeze and tuck into some very decent dishes in a peaceful atmosphere.

In conclusion, don't just look to visit Jomtien Beach for the day, consider staying in the area which is more upmarket, quieter, with larger swatches of beach to enjoy, and plenty to do and see. You won't regret it.
